Types of Arrows Used in Japanese Kyudo

Introduction to Kyudo Arrows

Kyudo is a martial art of archery, so naturally arrows are essential. Modern Kyudo arrows come in three types: Kinteki-ya (short-range), Enteki-ya (long-range), and Makiwara-ya (straw target practice), made from three materials: aluminum, carbon, and bamboo.

Kinteki-ya are used for 28-meter ranges. Aluminum arrows are affordable and suitable for beginners. Carbon arrows are more durable with less flex. Bamboo arrows are the most precious, each handcrafted by arrow artisans through meticulous sanding and fire-straightening.

Enteki-ya are used for 60-meter ranges. They have shorter feathers and lower feather profiles to reduce air resistance.

Makiwara-ya have round tips to prevent puncturing the straw target surface. They come with or without feathers.

Regardless of which arrows you buy, take good care of them. Don't develop a careless attitude just because they're less expensive.

Many archery shops partner with 'Takumi no Ya' to let you customize your own arrows — choosing materials, feathers, and components.
